Join OCIC and hosts Development & Peace for a Breakfast Meeting on the topic of social media in international cooperation. The rise and growing accessibility of new social media technologies in industrialized parts of the world brings many changes to communities and the way business is done. Online platforms now allow people to be plugged into all sorts of issues with the click of a button.  Through a simple text  via cell phone or internet people can now be informed of pressing news and actions in local and global communities.  This Breakfast Meeting is achance to hear and share some of the ways in which social media is beign used by international cooperation organizations from things suchas raising awareness, building capacity and mobilizing the public.

A panel of speakers will present case studies which highlight successes and challenges in the use of social media in their work.

Speakers include:

Raphael Arens, a recent addition to the Development & Peace team. His presentation will focus on a Social Media Pilot Project which aims to create accessible and sustainable social media platforms on popular social media sites (YouTube, Twitter, YouTube, Blog) for all members of the organization. He will also share a case study of an online fundraising tool which gives participants the opportunity to raise funds online using e.g. Social Media platforms.
This will include a lessons learned presentation on Development & Peace’s fundraising campaign (e.i. What questions to ask, Do’s and don’ts, etc.).

Anushka Tillakaratne, Volunteer Management Assistant at TakingITGlobal, a social network which connects socially engaged and active youth to each other and to the issues that affect us all. Her presentation will focus on the growth on Web 2.0 tools and more specifically the ubiquitous use of Information Communication Technologies (ICTs). This will include a brief examination of TIG's online tools. I will also touch on a bit of the delivery of a multilingual platform through the efforts of online volunteers.

Nucci Walsh, Program Development and Marketing Manager at Youth Challenge International (YCI). Through a look at YCI’s volunteer programs, this presentation will focus on the uses of social media in volunteer preparation from stages of recruitment through to post-project engagement.  This will include a look at the challenges that also arise with the use social media in an international and cross-cultural setting.  The presentation will provide some ideas as to how organizations can put things in place to adapt to the wide distribution of media messages by volunteers overseas.
